Russian State Herzen University (Herzen University) is one of the oldest teacher-training institutions in the country. It was founded on 2(14) May 1797 by Emperor Paul I as St. Petersburg Educational House, and later lay the foundations for other pedagogical institutions in the XIX – early XX centuries. These were formed into a single pedagogical institute by Decree of the People’s Commissar for Education on 1 September 1918. On 15 January 1920 the Presidium of the All-Union Executive Committee decreed that the institute be named after Alexander Herzen.
Today the University comprises 5 institutes, 21 faculties, 3 affiliations in the towns of Volkhov, Vyborg, and Makhachkala, over 130 departments, 3 research centers, 27 educational and cultural centers including the Linguistic Center, the DAAD Resource Center, and the St. Petersburg School of Conference Interpreting and Translation. All departments work in close cooperation with the University’s over 25 research centers and laboratories, including: the Physics Research Institute, the Continuing Education Research Institute, and the General Education Research Institute.
The Department carries out practical training of highly qualified specialists in the field of classical and modern choreography and teaching methods of the advanced domestic and global schools of music and dance in using a system of master-classes of leading Russian and foreign teachers.
Studied special disciplines: methods, theory and composition of classical ballet, folk-stage, character and modern dance; directing and acting skills; history of ballet, music theater, used various forms of practical training on the topics: samples choreographic heritage; dances of the peoples of the world, modern dance trends: jazz, modern, swing, hip hop, step, mastery of choreographer, theory and history of choreography, the basics of acting and directing in the dance, samples dancing repertoire, fundamentals of choreographic drama, costume and stage design dance, analysis of musical and choreographic forms.
Its task the Department makes promote the integration of socio-cultural environment of the University in the cultural space of St Petersburg; expansion of international contacts in the field of dance and modern dance; the organization of international cooperation by establishing an exchange program.The scope of activities of the Department include:educational projects;-collection and dissemination of information about the various types of contemporary choreography;-organization and holding of festivals, competitions, master classes, courses of improvement of qualification. Organizes annual international scientific conference on the problems of choreographic teaching, open Student theater of contemporary dance.
On Department of Choreography hold practical seminars with guest teachers. From 2008 to 2010, the faculty of music (Institute of music, theatre and dance) visited: Kimberly Fletcher (USA), Eddie Ocampo (USA), Anna Kolblat (Sweden), Ivan Semenihin (Russia), Luke Molina Gascon (Argentina), Ariadne Naveira (Argentina), Alexander Андрияшин (Russia), Julie Pekka (France), Romeo Ballayan (USA.), Lily Burdinskaia (UK), Lisa Noyonen (Finland), Martin Forsberg (Denmark), Kristina Klein (Germany), Steve Batts (Northern Ireland), Barbara Haley (USA), Vijay Rayal (India), Alexander Pubis (Russia). Taking into account the peculiarities of the growing interest of young people to various kinds of modern choreographic art at the Department developed and tested a new model of the educational process. Taking the «Western» model of multilevel educational system, the teachers of the chair, drawing on their experience, offer new development which gives a more complete view of the contemporary dance and new procedure of its teaching.
